5 Ways to Blast Through Your Fear of Failure Monday, Mar 11 2013

I have the great pleasure of having Ashley from Your Super Awesome Life guest posting on my blog today!! Check out her advice on blasting through your fear of failure!

When I decided to quit my 9-5 job, move to Canada and launch Your Super Awesome Life as a full-time gig, I was completely terrified. I mean, how could I not be? I was giving up my stability, my financial security, my comfort zone, and my home. I was taking a huge leap with the not-so-set-in-stone plan of figuring it all out on the way down. Learn as you go never felt so real. I knew it was a huge transition, but my heart was completely in it and I had to follow through.

So how did I do it? How did I overcome my fear of failure without having a nervous breakdown?

I trusted my gut and I went for it.

I took a lot of deep breaths.

I focused on what was immediately in front of me so that I wouldn’t be overwhelmed by the chaos of the big picture.

But that doesn’t mean that I didn’t feel stressed out. It doesn’t mean I didn’t cry, I didn’t freak out, and I didn’t question how it would all work out. It just means that I put one foot in front of the other and I kept moving forward.

When you’re taking any kind of risk, it’s normal to feel crazy scared, to question if it’s worth it, and to worry if you’re going to fail. But these risks are what help propel you forward. They are what help you grow. They are what bring your closer to the life you want.

5 ways to blast through your fear of failure:

01. Reframe your fear

Embracing the idea that there is no failure, only lessons, can help you move past this fear. In every experience there is an opportunity for learning and a new adventure. Thomas Edison believed there were 1000 steps to success and 999 of those were “failures”. Yet, he was so intensely committed to his vision, his process, and his work, he was willing to endure 999 uncomfortable steps before hitting the 1000th breakthrough step.

02. Focus on how you want to feel

Instead of setting your attention on your fear, focus on how you want to feel. Do you want to feel successful? Alive? Energized? At peace? Secure? Focusing on these feelings will help you move past your fear and closer toward your desired state.

03. Consider, “What is the worst that could happen?”

If you’re honest with yourself, it’s probably not that bad. Your ego might be bruised, you might be embarrassed and you might feel disappointed, but your life will not be over. You will be able to stand up again and move forward without having regret. Realistically acknowledging the possible outcomes allows you to place some context around your fear so that it is not a wildly nebulous feeling. Now you know  the worst thing that could happen and you can decide if it’s worth it. (Most likely, it is!)

04. Remember, if nothing changes, nothing changes

Being afraid that you might fail is scary. I get it. But if you don’t move past that fear and actually do something, nothing will change. You will not have accomplished that goal, you will not be one step closer to the life you want, and you won’t feel amazingly proud of yourself for doing it in spite of the fear. So why not do it anyway?

05. Ask yourself,”Is this fear or is it excitement?”

Sometimes we think we are feeling fear when it is really excitement disguised as fear. If we haven’t felt genuine excitement in a while, it can easy to forget the feeling of butterflies, sweaty palms, and racing hearts is linked to this positive emotion. Getting clear on whether you’re experience fear or excitement can help you move past your fear of failure.

And if that’s not enough to convince you to take a leap, JK Rowling has some pretty awesome thoughts on failure.

“Some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without failing at something unless you live so cautiously that you might as well have not lived at all, in which case you’ve failed by default.” – JK Rowling

How do you blast through your fear of failure?

Waiting and waiting and waiting some more Friday, Mar 1 2013

Do you ever just wonder what you are doing here, in this life?

I’ve been thinking about that lately.

How do you know what you are doing is what you are actually meant to be doing?

I don’t think there is an answer for that. Most people will say ‘Ya just know’. A few days ago, I heard someone say that they have always told their kids that life is too short to not do what you love.

But, what if you don’t know what you love to do? Or are good at?

Again, something I’ve been thinking about.

I’m worried that I’m running out of time. For everything.

You can never get it back, time. Just gone.

Time. Waiting. Waiting for the other shoe to drop. Wishing I could get time back but knowing it won’t happen.

Waiting.
